What is Long Addition?
Long addition is a standard method for adding numbers together on paper. It involves writing the numbers one above the other, aligning them by their place value (ones, tens, hundreds, etc.). You then add each column of digits, starting from the rightmost column.
What does "Carrying the One" mean?
When the sum of a column is 10 or greater, you "carry" the tens digit over to the next column to the left. For example, if you add 8 + 7 in the ones column, the sum is 15. You write down the 5 in the ones place and "carry" the 1 to the tens column to be included in its sum. Our calculator shows this carried digit in amber above the numbers.
