Understanding Time Addition
Adding time can be tricky because it doesn't use a standard base-10 system. Here’s a quick guide to how it works and why our tool is so helpful.
How does time carry-over work?
Time addition involves three units: hours, minutes, and seconds. When adding, if the sum of seconds exceeds 59, you divide by 60. The remainder becomes the new seconds, and the quotient is carried over to the minutes column. The same logic applies to minutes: if the sum exceeds 59, the excess is carried over to the hours column. For example, 80 seconds becomes 1 minute and 20 seconds.
Can I add time values that exceed 24 hours?
Yes. This calculator is designed to sum total durations, not calculate clock time. For example, adding 18 hours and 10 hours will correctly result in 28 hours, rather than wrapping around a 24-hour clock. This is ideal for calculating total work hours, project durations, or accumulated flight times.
What are the practical uses for this calculator?
This tool is extremely versatile. Common uses include:
- Project Management: Summing up time spent on various tasks to get a total project duration.
- Payroll: Calculating total hours worked from timesheets.
- Video/Audio Editing: Adding clip lengths to determine the final runtime.
- Aviation & Logistics: Calculating total flight or travel times, including layovers.
